If all you want is a Portuguese passport, and you already have your citizenship, it takes about 4 days to issue your ID/ Passport, and, approximately 1 week after your appointment is scheduled, you will have it in your hands.
If you don’t have your citizenship yet, it will take about 3 years from the moment you start the procedure with us until you have your birth certificate delivered.

It consists of 3 stages. The first stage is Confirmation of Portuguese Citizenship, the second stage is Application for Portuguese ID, and the third stage is Application for Portuguese Passport.
Example: Maria, who was born in Lisbon, is Ana’s mother, who, in turn, is David’s mom. David is interested in getting himself a Portuguese passport. In this case, it is enough that Maria and Ana confirm their citizenship, one after the other, for David to get his passport and start working in Paris.

First Stage | Confirmation of the Portuguese Citizenship

A person is Portuguese by Law, if proven that he/she has Sephardic descent or if one of the parents are Portuguese at the time of birth.

Second Stage | Application for Portuguese ID

In order to issue a Portuguese ID, first you need to book an appointment at the Portuguese Authorities Office, or in the Consulate, in case you are not currently in Portugal. The documents needed to present once you are there are the following:

  • Portuguese Birth
  • Certificate
Valid Passport (from your host country)

Third Stage | Application for Portuguese Passport

After having your Portuguese ID in hands, another appointment at the Portuguese Authorities Office (or in the Consulate) will be needed. This time, the only document necessary is your Portuguese ID.
